Breaking the Mineral Ceiling: Recognising Women Who Transform DRC’s Industries

For decades, mining and energy in the DRC were portrayed as male‑dominated frontiers. That narrative is now obsolete. Women are not only entering these sectors—they are leading them, often with a dual focus on profit and community welfare. The Woman in Leadership & Impact Award at the DRC Elite Awards is designed to honour these pioneers and send a signal that gender equality is not a side issue but a strategic advantage.

Why is this category critical? Because the DRC’s development goals cannot be met without the full participation of women. Consider the numbers: recent initiatives such as the UK‑IFC partnership have invested USD 2.3 million specifically to support over 300 women‑owned SMEs in agriculture. In the mining belt, women are taking on senior operational roles at major copper and cobalt sites. In energy, female engineers are leading the rollout of off‑grid solar solutions. Yet these stories rarely make headlines. The Woman in Leadership award changes that by creating visible role models.

The award celebrates a woman who is breaking barriers while making a measurable impact on her community and the next generation of Congolese talent. This is not a tokenistic “diversity” prize. The judging criteria include hard metrics: revenue growth under her leadership, number of jobs created for other women, health and safety improvements, and concrete community development projects. Past profiles that would fit this category include a female director who negotiated fair prices for artisanal miners, or an agri‑entrepreneur who built a cassava processing facility that now employs 200 local women.

Nominating someone for this award is an act of empowerment. It tells that leader that her work is seen and valued. It also encourages companies and government agencies to invest more in female talent pipelines. The DRC Elite Awards, organised under the DRC Investment Forum, have made a point of elevating this category because research shows that diverse leadership correlates with better environmental, social and governance outcomes—vital for attracting ethical investment.

Every woman who receives this award becomes a beacon for young girls across the country. She proves that a career in mining, energy or agriculture is not only possible but prestigious. The DRC’s future depends on this message spreading.

Winners will be announced during the Gala Dinner on 28 August 2026 at the DRC Investment Forum. Nominations close 30 May 2026. For more information or to nominate a woman leader, click here: https://www.drcinvestforum.com/awards
